Urban Community Montessori (UCM) is a non-profit Montessori school with a mission to
provide equitable and inclusive education to underrepresented and underserved families in
Birmingham, Alabama. Founded by Montessorian Courtney Davis in 2021, UCM is the only,
Black-led Montessori program in the state and the only operating Montessori program within
Birmingham city limits.
UCM’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and equity in education is reflected in its
intentional promotion of diversity and representation in its student body and leadership team.
UCM offers sliding-scale tuition rates and wraparound services to support students with a wide
range of needs, including those with learning difficulties. By providing access to high-quality
Montessori education to families from all socioeconomic backgrounds, UCM is working to
address the historical barriers to education that have impacted communities in Birmingham.
UCM offers an innovative and nurturing curriculum that emphasizes independence, freedom within limits,
and respect for the whole child. The school’s prepared learning environments encourage
students to explore and discover through hands-on, self-directed activities. UCM is a Montessori-
based educational program that promotes the development of life skills, collaboration with peers and teachers,
project-based teachings, and a love of learning that will last a lifetime.
UCM has created a diverse and inclusive learning environment that reflects the rich diversity of
Birmingham’s communities. UCM strives to ensure that its Montessori-based education is
accessible to families from all socioeconomic backgrounds. Your contribution and partnership create space for UCM to reach its maximum potential. Each contribution speaks to your commitment to equitable, accessible, and affordable learning environments and is wholly appreciated.
